Eurasian Patent System Presented for the Caribbean Region

On March 10, 2021, a representative of the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO) spoke at the webinar on benefits of convergence of IP systems for cross-border trade organized by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) as part of a project on cooperation with the Caribbean countries in the field of intellectual property and innovations (CarIPI project).

The CarIPI project is being implemented by the EUIPO and the member states of the CARIFORUM interregional cooperation agreement, which are also states party to the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union.

The EUIPO webinar, attended by over 50 participants from 16 CARIFORUM member states, was aimed at raising awareness among national IP institutions, ministries of trade and foreign affairs, and private sector in the Caribbean region on the role of IP rights protected by international and regional agreements in promoting cross-border trade and the importance of regional integration in the field of intellectual property for national economies in the region.

Mr. Andrey Sekretov, Director of International Relations Department of the EAPO, in his presentation outlined the activities of the Eurasian Patent Organization, highlighted basic principles of the Eurasian patent system, its advantages for applicants, national patent systems and economies of Organization’s Member States as a whole. He informed about the development of cooperation activities of the EAPO following the entry into force of the Protocol on the Protection of Industrial Designs.
