At its 9th session that took place in a hybrid format November 1 to 5, 2021, the Committee on WIPO Standards (CWS) positively considered and adopted a new Standard (ST.91) on digital three-dimensional (3D) models and 3D images, developed by the 3D Task Force led by the Russian Federation. The Standard provides recommendations for Intellectual Property Offices and other interested parties that manage, store, process, exchange or disseminate IP data using 3D models and 3D images, including the recommendations for 3D models and 3D images formats and file size, procedural recommendations for filing and processing of 3D models and 3D images, recommendations for data exchange and publication as well as partial claiming. The proposed Standard was supported by the delegations of Germany, the Republic of Korea, the USA, Japan, the European Union Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office. The International Bureau and Assistant Director General Kenichiro Natsume highly appreciated the productive and fruitful work of the Task Force, emphasizing the importance of the new Standard. Now the Task Force has a more ambitious objective to ensure the necessary revisions and updates of WIPO Standard ST. 91 including methods of search for 3D models and 3D images. The future work will be based on the best practices of the Russian and foreign experts, involving the Saint-Petersburg Polytechnic University. The WIPO Secretariat and the Member States highly appreciated the efforts and contribution of the Russian experts to the work of the CWS Task Forces.
